I live year ‘round in the town of West Tisbury near the center of Martha’s Vineyard, a one hundred square mile island about five miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a great place to live and a great place to bird. My “Island Bird” print series of bird photography is an ongoing homage to the spirit and diversity of avian wildlife here on the Vineyard. The images I select for fine art prints intimate the feeling of what it is like to be at the right place at the right time, when fortune and intention unite bird and birder.

For a number of years my bird photographs, which I refer to as Avian Art, have been published in newspaper and magazine features, as well as on calendars, brochures and book covers. If the reader is familiar with my bird photography for the Vineyard Gazette – the photo essays and the pictures that illustrate the Bird News column – you will notice in my fine art prints an entirely different scale and scenes that are less about portraiture and more about capturing the essential character of birds within their natural environment. Avian art is about the excitement of birding, being right there, tracking and observing, as seen through the eyes of a painter.
