Beach Run 10/17/08

by Lanny McDowell on October 17, 2008

This will be mostly pictures.  “Whew” you say.  I get it.

But, furthermore, I wanted to share with all of you … OK.  Okay!  At least it’s not from or about politics.  Well, it is, in a more philosophical sense.  Ever notice how much literary and conversational ground the word “Philosophical” covers?  You add that word into a statement or question and people get real quiet.  “Existential” I think you can toss out there like nuts to squirrels, but “Philosophical” with a capital P makes people think you might be operating at some other level.  Like, deep, man.

This morning I took Stella on an early 4X4 beach run down to the Norton Point cut (at Katama on Martha’s Vineyard).  Allan and Soo I encountered coming back along the bay side track.  They had picked up a couple knots and the regular shorebirds.  When I got out to the cut, in with the Semi-palm Plovers was a single Pectoral Sandpiper making itself invisible in the dry seaweed.  Occasionally one of the Semi-palms would shuffle over to roust the Pectoral, just enough to get it to move.  It would move off, then, invariably, seek the company of another Semi-palm to resume the snooze.

Wrack line buddies:

Sometimes a closeup of a familiar species makes it look not so familiar.  It is also sometimes remarkable how very small a Ring-billed looks next to a Herring Gull or a GBBG.

This situation does not look promising.  Sorry, bud.

On the way home I drove through the big fields at the Farm Institute and there was a lone immature Snow Goose in with hordes of Canadas.  I will be the first to admit, I must be on the top ten list of the world’s worst digiscopers.  It’s a very long shot; and this is the best I’ve got.

Birds are cool!  Lanny
