Did the Nantucket (ACK) CBC on the 27th. The unofficial tally was 134 species. The weather was dark, warmish, with not so much wind (for Nantucket); and it degraded over the course of the day until there were no land birds at all to be found during the last couple of hours of sort-of daylight, at least not on the west end of the island. There were four Snowy Owls on count day, three of them on one long barrier beach called Great Point. The next day, Sunday, I rode out there with three other folks to look for Snowies. In many ways the geography and topography are very much like Cape Pogue on the Vineyard’s Chappaquiddick Island, also a good place to find Snowies in season. We did find one on Great Point, a solid white adult male. The day was windy, with medium to dense fog, wet as much from the fog as any rain.
The bonus find was a gorgeous adult Peregrine. We came across it twice, elegantly and strategicly placed on two of the very few driftwood perches commanding the east facing beach. Sanderlings appeared to be the only other bird species actually using the sandy beach. Whatever else was on or over the water was ocscured by the scudding fog.

Birds are cool! Lanny

Thanks so much, Tom. I just noticed the list of birding blogs at your site at http://tpirro.blogspot.com/. That is great to have. I am headed out into this wild night for the festivities we expect annually this night, though it’s really local, really rural and walkable almost any other night. I will peruse your blog in the very near future, have a look around, etc.
